About the Newcastle Music Scene

Since the 1960’s, there have been a number of world class guitarists and successful nationwide musicians to emerge from the Newcastle Upon Tyne and North East area. These include;

  • The Animals formed in Newcastle Upon Tyne and famous for hits such as “House of the Rising Sun”, “We Gotta Get out of This Place” and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”. The Animals’ original bassist – the late Chas Chandler also went on to become manager of Slade and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It is said that Jimi Hendrix could be seen busking on Chillingham Road, Heaton whilst living with Chad!

    The Animals

    The Animals

  • Hank Marvin – World famous guitarist with instrumental group,The Shadows and famous for clean, heavily- reverbed, vibrato’d Fender tones as heard on songs such as, “Apache”.
  • Bruce Welch – Also a guitar in The Shadows who was born in Chester-le-Street, County Durham and formed another Newcastle based band, also joined by Hank Marvin prior to the formation of The Shadows.
  • Mark Knopfler and David Knopfler – Lead and rhythm guitarists and co- founders of Dire Straits – famous for songs such as “Money for nothing” (Featuring fellow Newcastle-based musician, Sting)”, “Sultans of swing”, “Romeo and Juliet” and “Walk of Life.” In the 1950’s, as children, the Knopfler brothers relocated from Glasgow back to Blyth, in the North East of England – their mother’s original birthplace. Both brothers attended Gosforth Grammar School. Famous for his finger-picked guitar riffs and solo’s and ranked 27th greatest guitar of all time by Rolling Stones magazine, Mark Knopfler experienced humble beginings; as a child Mark wanted a Fiesta Red Fender Stratocaster as played by Hank Marvin of The Shadows, but had to initially settle for a £50 budget guitar by Höfner!
  • Sting – Bassist with The Police and Solo Artist in his own right, having won 16 Grammy Awards and famous for hits such as “Every Breath You Take,” “Fields of Gold”, “Message In A Bottle”, and “Don’t stand so close to me” – Sting was born in Wallsend, Newcastle, near the shipyards. He attended St Cuthbert’s Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne and Northumbria University after qualifying as a teacher and teaching at St Paul’s First School in Cramlington for two years.
  • Andy Taylor (Original Guitarist of Duran Duran) was born and raised in Cullercoats, North Tyneside, Newcastle, attending Marden High School. Andy received guitar lessons from the age of eleven from Dave Black – a member of David Bowie‘s band, “The Spiders From Mars. Later, a record producer, session musician and songwriter to Robert Palmer, Ros Stewart and Belinda Carlisle.

Other musicians from the Newcastle and North East area include; Lindisfarne (“Fog on the Tyne” – Newcastle) , Brian Johnson “Highway To Hell” – lead singer of ACDC (Dunston, Gateshead), Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music (from Sunderland, Newcastle, Washington), Jimmy Nail from Benton, “Crocodile Shoes”, “Aint No Doubt”, Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys (From North Shields), Prefab Sprout “The King of Rock n Roll” from Witton Gilbert, County Durham

Then in more recent years, Dubstar “Stars”, The Wildhearts “Sick of Drugs”, Maxïmo Park “Our Velocity”, Nadine Shah “Fast Food” (Whitburn, Sunderland) – Now working with producer Ben Hillier producer of Blur and Elbow, The Chapman Family (Teesside) and Little Comets to name just a few!

Whether you aspire to be included in our list of world class guitarists and well known North East musicians, or would just like to take up guitar as a hobby; many students of Savage Guitar Studio go on to achieve guitar grade examinations and some now work as professional musicians themselves!
